iPod Touch Released!

itouch.jpg

I was a grouch this morning when I discovered that my programming course was cancelled due to low enrollment.

However…

Now, I’m happy. Very happy. Only downside is the max size is 16GB. Ah well. I can live with that…since it also has wireless 802.11 b/g. Sweetness.

IPhones flooding wireless LAN at Duke University

OK, who didn’t see this coming? Honestly?

From Network World:

The Wi-Fi connection on Apple’s recently released iPhone seems to be the source of a big headache for network administrators at Duke University.

The built-in 802.11b/g adapters on several iPhones periodically flood sections of the Durham, N.C. school’s pervasive wireless LAN with MAC address requests, temporarily knocking out anywhere from a dozen to 30 wireless access points at a time. Campus network staff are talking with Cisco, the main WLAN provider, and have opened a help desk ticket with Apple. But so far, the precise cause of the problem remains unknown.

“Because of the time of year for us, it’s not a severe problem,” says Kevin Miller, assistant director, communications infrastructure, with Duke’s Office of Information Technology. “But from late August through May, our wireless net is critical. My concern is how many students will be coming back in August with iPhones? It’s a pretty big annoyance, right now, with 20-30 access points signaling they’re down, and then coming back up a few minutes later. But in late August, this would be devastating.”

iPhone Buyers Have No Regrets

Well, that is certainly some good news. The rumours abound that there will be an Apple iPhone release here in Canada in the fall. But, whether or not that will come to fruition is another thing entirely.

From USA Today:

Early iPhone owners are overwhelmingly happy with their devices, a survey out Friday says, and Apple (AAPL) and AT&T (T) are luring customers from rivals as a result.

In one of the first such studies, 90% of 200 owners said they were “extremely” or “very” satisfied with their phone. And 85% said they are “extremely” or “very” likely to recommend the device to others, says the online survey conducted and paid for by market researcher Interpret of Santa Monica, Calif. The firm surveyed 1,000 cellphone users July 6-10.

The findings are “pretty much off the charts,” says Jason Kramer, Interpret’s chief strategy officer.

The firm’s clients are in the entertainment and mobile industries.

iPhone Tear Down Video

The real must-watch teardown comes from Semiconductor Insights. TechOnline’s Patrick Mannion posted a detailed companion story, here. Here’s the five-minute teardown video. Check out how the guy opening up the iPhone approaches it like a surgeon. I half-expected him to anesthetize the device first. FYI, the audio quality on this clip is poor, so crank up your volume control before you press play.

iPhone Without AT&T…

iphonehand.jpg

Jon Lech Johansen, the same person who broke DVD encryption, has apparently found away around AT&T activation. He has yet to post his methodology but, we will update when he does. If that’s the case then I’ll be able to get one for use on Rogers in Canada.

I’ve found a way to activate a brand new unactivated iPhone without giving any of your personal information or money to AT&T. The iPhone does not have phone capability, but the iPod and WiFi work. Stay tuned!

Also, I have gotten word from a source that Canada should expect to see the iPhone by the fall. I can only assume that Rogers will be the carrier as they are the only game in town for GSM.

UPDATE:

Here is the how to:

Update:

Magic iTunes numbers:

Offset 2048912: 33C0C3

Offset 257074: 28

Offset 257013: 33C9B1

Add “127.0.0.1 albert.apple.com” to c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Download Phone Activation Server v1.0 to activate your iPhone for iPod+WiFi use. Note that this application will not do anything unless you understand the magic numbers as well as add the hosts entry. Phone Activation Server (PAS) requires that you have the MS .NET Framework 2.0 installed.

iPhone Scams

iPhone is out and the criminal element is trying to cash in.

From security site SANS:

Readers have been reporting new e-mail scams related to the Apple iPhone today. With a wide variety of new topics to choose from over the weekend, the iPhone apparently came out on top.

One e-mail claims you have ‘won a new iPhone’. Clicking on the link however brings you to a page that attempts to exploit a number of well known Internet Explorer vulnerabilities and then downloads a malicious executable ’sys—-.exe’. This executable installs itself as a service and upon review appears to be a spam bot. Anti virus coverage was very spotty this morning but has improved during the day.

Another scam aims to convince readers they need to go and buy an iPhone on what appears to be an Apple site (faked using a browser helper object). Naturally the site does not belong to Apple and you end up paying someone in Latvia.

iPhone Verdict?

iphonedemo.jpg

So, now the iPhone is out what do people think? John Gruber weighs in on his experiences after he and his wife picked up theirs.

Overall day one impression: the iPhone is 95 percent amazing, 5 percent maddening. I’m just blown away by how nice it is – very thoughtful UI design and outstanding engineering. It is very fun.

Booting: A cold boot takes about 20 seconds. (Sleep/wake is effectively instantaneous – far faster than any Mac.)

Activation: Went pretty well for me and my wife. We already had an AT&T family plan. The only options are to create new AT&T accounts or to add iPhone data plans to existing ones. It more or less comes out to the same $120/month for the two of us, either way. It’s a shame activation is taking so long for some people, but for us, it took about one minute per phone.

My phone needed to be power-cycled before it “saw” the activation.

Now, we Canadians sit and wait.
